## Is Corsica's GR20 still worth walking?

The GR20 is often presented as Corsica's iconic hike, even one of Europe's hardest treks. Crossing the island from north to south, following granite ridges and tackling technical stages inspires thousands of hikers each year.

But the GR20 has also become a victim of its success. In peak season, huts and camping areas are fully booked. Trails can be very busy, and the experience sometimes falls far short of the solitary adventure imagined from photographs.

So hikers increasingly ask: is the GR20 still worth walking today? Between iconic trek and overcrowded trail, here are practical facts to know before starting. At RayonRando, we also have a necessarily more subjective opinion, which we will share.

## Has the GR20 become a victim of its success?

The GR20 attracts hikers from around the world every year. Its popularity has transformed some sections, occasionally bringing them close to saturation.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/41b6b5e025/w/606.webp)

### Very high summer visitor numbers: crowded camps and trails

Between June and September, GR20 visitor numbers rise sharply.

- Crowded camps:

In July and August, huts are often full weeks ahead, and camping areas can also be saturated. The result is poorer service, noise and queues for showers…

- Single file on the GR20:

With everyone sleeping in the same place and many leaving early, the trail is congested from the morning start. Although the group spreads out, bottlenecks also form because of differing speeds and oncoming walkers, particularly on difficult or steep sections. This can create relatively dangerous situations on tricky ground or in deteriorating weather.

The result is a sometimes less wild experience. The image of an isolated trek in Corsica's mountains does not match midsummer reality. Hikers primarily seeking tranquillity and peaceful immersion in nature may be surprised.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/84b2abc593/w/988.webp)

### The constraint of booking everything:

Camping near huts was already compulsory. For several years, reservations have also been mandatory at each camp, even to pitch your own tent. Unfortunately, we consider this understandable where overcrowding can damage nature through disturbance and litter, increase fire risks and endanger people.

But it has genuinely unpleasant consequences for trekking enthusiasts:

- All accommodation must be booked well ahead.
- Changing plans once there is almost impossible. Combining a short stage with the next, or staying put because of bad weather or fatigue, is not possible. You must cancel at least 48 h in advance, with bookings non-transferable and non-changeable, and hope space remains where you want to sleep. In short, you cannot adapt your route in the field.
- Your stages are therefore dictated by official camps. You cannot plan around your pace and preferences, except by completing 2 stages in 1 day.
- The cost of huts, but especially camping: €12 per person, or €24 for a 2-person tent. This seems high for permission to pitch and use washrooms, when wild camping elsewhere is generally free.
- Incidentally, arrive early if you want to choose your pitch.

The huts are managed by the regional natural park. Book at: <https://pnr-resa.corsica/>

### Much depends on the season

Visitor numbers vary considerably through the year. June or September can be quieter. Some stages also remain relatively wild, away from the most popular areas.

Despite this popularity, the GR20 keeps attracting walkers for a simple reason: it is an exceptional hike.

## Why do we still want to go? The GR20 remains iconic

The GR20 fascinates so many hikers for good reason. Few routes offer such a complete mountain experience.

### A spectacular crossing of Corsica

The GR20 crosses Corsica north to south over around 180 kilometres. It often follows ridges, offering impressive panoramas of Corsican mountains and sometimes the sea.

The stages bring highly varied landscapes:

- rocky ridges
- high-altitude lakes
- pine and beech forests
- high plateaux
- summits with 360° views.

This landscape variety, alternating high mountains and gentler pastoral settings, greatly contributes to the GR20's reputation.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/ffabfbc452/w/893.webp)

### A demanding, committed trek

The GR20 is also known for substantial elevation gain, with over 10,000 metres of total ascent. Terrain is often rocky and requires attention, particularly in the north.

For many hikers, completing the entire GR20 is a real challenge.

A trek that remains exceptional

The GR20 remains remarkable. Its scenery, technical terrain and full crossing of Corsica make it a unique French adventure.

The GR20 also has a distinctive atmosphere. Huts bring together hikers from across Europe. Evenings sharing meals or discussing the next day's stages form part of the experience.

For many hikers, the GR20 leaves a lasting memory.

## GR20 difficulty: myth or reality?

The GR20's reputation as one of Europe's hardest hikes is widespread. But some walkers wonder whether it is exaggerated.

So, is the GR20 overrated?

### Demanding terrain and technical passages

The difficulty is real, but deserves nuance.

The trail includes:

- rocky passages
- scree
- steep climbs
- some sections with chains or cables.

Successive stages and daily elevation changes can also be taxing, especially with a loaded pack.

At RayonRando, we find that sometimes extremely rocky terrain is particularly tiring for the legs and body when the sun beats down. Do not be surprised if your footwear suffers unusual wear.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/99ecb5d2a0/w/891.webp)

### Sometimes exaggerated difficulty

However, the GR20 remains well waymarked, structured and documented. Huts are regularly spaced and water sources relatively numerous, except late in the season. Route and logistics are therefore simple to organise. Many stages are short enough for experienced hikers to combine them.

For a fit hiker accustomed to mountains, the GR20 is demanding but accessible. The GR20 is a physical trek, not an extreme expedition.

A warning for beginners!

Some hikers may reinforce this difficult reputation: those choosing to “do” the GR20 as a challenge, as others want to “do” Mont Blanc, without solid experience of self-sufficient trekking. For them, it can be genuinely gruelling and justify the GR20's reputation.

## When the GR20 may disappoint

The GR20 is not necessarily ideal for every type of hiker.

It may disappoint if:

- you want an isolated hike, feeling far from the world
- you want several days without meeting many other walkers.
- you want to disconnect from ordinary social life and find silence and tranquillity.
- you can only travel in peak summer
- you dislike the sometimes lively atmosphere of shared huts and camps.
- you want freedom to camp where you like and adapt your route and stages to preferences and conditions.

In these cases, the experience may differ from your expectations.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/9982b91ea5/w/875.webp)

## How to avoid crowds on the GR20

Despite the GR20's heavy use, there are several ways to enjoy the trail more.

### Choose the right period

Numbers vary greatly by month. June and September are often considered the most pleasant, with generally good conditions and fewer people than during summer holidays. Even so, it remains busier than elsewhere, with potential late snow in June and drought in September.

### Adapt your stages

Many hikers follow classic guidebook stages. Slight route adjustments through alternatives or combined stages can avoid groups and bring you to huts earlier.

For official stages, consult the Regional Natural Park website: <https://www.pnr.corsica/fr/randonnees-decouverte/gr-20-fra-li-monti>

### Leave early in the morning

An early start lets you enjoy mountain tranquillity. Temperatures are more pleasant and technical sections often quieter. However, you will never be the only ones with this idea.

## An alternative to the GR20? Corsica, of course!

Want to discover Corsica's magnificent scenery peacefully, on quiet paths? Good news: it is easy. Walk any Corsican trail except the GR20!

There are many: the Mare a Mare and Mare e Monti, of course, but also local paths.

During a Corsica trip originally planned on the GR20, a RayonRando team hiker revised the route because of late snow in early June. The result was a route from the Calanques de Piana on empty paths, fully enjoying the landscapes.

For everything about these Corsican alternatives to the GR20, read our article: [“Corsica: much more than the GR20”](https://www.rayonrando.com/en/content/136-hiking-in-corsica-far-beyond-the-gr20).

Those determined to walk the GR20 can combine selected GR20 sections with other, largely overlooked paths.

## Alternatives to the GR20 for a wilder experience

For quieter but demanding treks with superb landscapes, many other routes are no further away than Corsica.

For example:

- GR54 – Tour de l'Oisans et des Écrins, a highly demanding Alpine trek
- The Dolomites: fabulous, distinctive scenery, with some technical but well-waymarked sections. Discover more in our article “The Dolomites are fantastic”.
- Iceland and the Landmanalaugar trek: fascinating scenery and a well-defined route. Read our article “Iceland…”.
- Selvaggio Blu in Sardinia, a wild, highly demanding trek.

These routes offer a different but unforgettable and quieter experience…

## Conclusion

The GR20 remains one of France's most impressive hikes. Crossing Corsica offers spectacular scenery and a rewarding physical challenge.

But accept the reality: the trail is now very busy, especially in midsummer, affecting the experience and constraining organisation. Much depends on your timing and expectations.

If you dream of an iconic trek, the GR20 is still worthwhile. If solitude and full immersion in nature matter most, other routes in Corsica or elsewhere may better match your idea of adventure.

At RayonRando, trekking and wild camping mean some solitude, tranquillity and few constraints. We love Corsica but prefer parallel paths. You need not “do” the entire GR20 to discover the island fully. Combining other trails with selected GR20 sections seems an excellent option.

## Bushcraft tarp configurations

Pitching a tarp correctly is essential in bushcraft and self-sufficient camping. The same tarp offers very different protection depending on configuration, orientation and tension. Equipment alone makes less difference than how you use it.

In this article, RayonRando.com details 6 reliable, proven tarp pitches, from simplest to most protective. The aim is to understand when to use each configuration, its advantages, limitations and ideal conditions.

## What are the basics of pitching a tarp?

Before discussing configurations, some fundamentals always apply.

A good location does half the work. Seek slightly raised ground to avoid hollows collecting water, and use terrain or vegetation for wind protection. Always orient the shelter with its back to the prevailing wind.

Tension is crucial. A poorly tensioned tarp flaps, admits water and wears prematurely. Remember that tarps are rarely pitched high: the lower they are, the more protection they offer.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/7daf929088/w/750.webp)

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/18ae1fe220/w/750.webp)

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/5e9754c248/w/750.webp)

## Pitch no. 1: A-frame

The A-frame is best known and often learned first. Stretch the tarp over a central ridgeline between two trees or poles, then anchor its sides to the ground.

It offers good rain protection and balanced interior space. Relatively simple, it works well with a 3×3 m tarp. However, it provides less side-wind protection if poorly oriented.

Use: this pitch is ideal for beginners and mild weather. It is very quick between 2 trees.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/2efc506ac8/w/423.webp)

## Pitch no. 2: lean-to

The lean-to is open, quick and minimalist. Raise one edge of the tarp and anchor the other to the ground, creating a sloping shelter against rain from one direction.

Comfortable in dry weather or light rain, it offers good visibility and excellent ventilation. However, it provides little protection against shifting winds or driving rain.

Use: favour this pitch for short camps and mild conditions. Also useful for daytime shelter or cooking, before repositioning it for the night if needed.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/735c6f1a2e/w/810.webp)

## Pitch no. 3: diamond fly

Use the tarp diagonally to maximise coverage from a square tarp, particularly over a hammock.

Quick to pitch, the diamond offers good lengthwise protection, but less side coverage and needs careful wind orientation.

Use: a useful configuration for hammocks and lightweight setups, providing good lengthwise coverage with reduced fabric area and total weight.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/40ee099d79/w/809.webp)

## Pitch no. 4: Canadian-style shelter

This pitch balances protection and ventilation. Tension the tarp asymmetrically, with an open front and lower rear.

It protects well against rain and prevailing wind while retaining a comfortable opening. Popular in woodland, it works particularly well with 3×3 m or 3×4 m tarps. It can be a light, quick-to-pitch tent alternative.

Interior space is more limited, making it better suited to lying down.

Use: at RayonRando, we think this is the most versatile pitch, suited to bushcraft and ultralight hiking. It can replace a tent on a fine-weather trek.

For even less weight, use the ultralight DD Hammocks [Superlight 2.9 x 3 m](https://www.rayonrando.com/en/tarps-and-bushcraft-bivouac-shelters/3856-superlight-29x3-m-tarp.html) tarp.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/47e7be16d2/w/1107.webp)

## Pitch no. 5: low enclosed shelter, storm mode

One of the most effective pitches in difficult conditions. Pitch very low with sides close to the ground to limit incoming air.

It provides excellent protection from wind, cold rain and heat loss. In exchange, interior space shrinks and ventilation needs monitoring because condensation risk increases.

Use: prioritises protection over comfort. For bad weather or cold conditions.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/217c2377f1/w/776.webp)

## Pitch no. 6: enclosed shelter with improvised doors

With a sufficiently large tarp (3×4 m or 4×4 m), folding the ends creates “doors”, almost entirely enclosing the shelter.

The DD hammocks [3x4.5](https://www.rayonrando.com/en/tarps-and-bushcraft-bivouac-shelters/3857-xl-45x3-m-tarp.html) and [4x4](https://www.rayonrando.com/en/tarps-and-bushcraft-bivouac-shelters/3860-4x4-m-tarp.html) tarps suit this configuration well.

It offers maximum weather protection at the cost of more technical pitching and reduced ventilation. Particularly suitable for extended camps or winter conditions.

Use: an advanced pitch for somewhat experienced users. Very reassuring when done well, but it needs a fairly large, therefore heavier, tarp.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/4c42dd075d/w/920.webp)

## Which pitch for which conditions?

Your choice depends chiefly on 4 factors: weather, terrain, daytime shelter or overnight camping, and experience.
In calm weather, an open pitch suffices. As wind or rain intensifies, lower the tarp, enclose the shelter and prioritise protection over space.

The same tarp can be pitched differently every night. This adaptability makes it such a powerful bushcraft tool.

## Common tarp pitching mistakes

Many problems stem from simple mistakes: pitching too high, poor tension, incorrect wind orientation or no slope for water run-off. Practising in good weather avoids these errors when they become critical.

## Conclusion

Mastering a few tarp pitches transforms camping. One tarp can adapt to almost any situation, provided you understand when and how to use each configuration.

At RayonRando.com, we see a tarp not as a cut-price shelter, but as a demanding, educational and extremely versatile tool.

It offers less comfort than a double-wall tent, but with low weight and an affordable price.

## How to find hiking route ideas in France?

Finding a hike in France may seem simple. Many hiking websites and apps help discover routes, consult detailed maps and download GPX tracks.

But this search faces 2 obstacles:

- How do you find simple, reliable route descriptions and maps? Tools vary. Some use official IGN mapping, others proprietary maps or OpenStreetMap. The ability to use maps offline can also be essential in areas without reception.
- How do you find good hikes suited to your activities? A description may be outdated, poorly document interest or difficulty, describe another season, reflect just one person's experience or be endorsed by many hikers…

RayonRando presents the main websites and apps for finding hiking routes in France, with key features and benefits.

We also explain how to choose an itinerary and create your own route.

## The most-used websites and apps for finding hikes

### Visorando

Visorando is among France's most popular platforms for hiking routes, offering a large database across all regions with detailed information and step-by-step descriptions.

Mapping used

- OpenStreetMap by default
- IGN maps available with a subscription

Offline use

- GPX track downloads available
- IGN maps downloadable offline with a subscription

Visorando is particularly valued for detailed descriptions and varied routes. Popular routes receive reviews and comments, sometimes providing precise additional information about their appeal and difficulties.

At RayonRando, we find it useful for discovering ideas and planning hikes before departure.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/8dcc6e208a/w/353.webp)

### VisoRando

### AllTrails

AllTrails is an international platform offering thousands of routes worldwide.

It is mainly used to quickly find hiking ideas in an area.

Mapping used

- proprietary maps based on OpenStreetMap

Offline use

- map and route downloads available with a premium subscription

AllTrails is a good source of inspiration, although description quality varies. In France, Visorando may be preferable, but at RayonRando we consider it essential for hiking abroad. Numerous reviews on popular routes help with choosing.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/6d45690574/w/341.webp)

### AllTrails

Komoot

Komoot is a fairly popular app for planning outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling and trail running. It emphasises route planning and GPS navigation.

Mapping used

- maps based mainly on OpenStreetMap

Offline use

- download a region's maps for offline use
- GPS navigation without reception once the region is downloaded.

Komoot is effective for planning and following routes in the field. However, we find it less informative than the previous 2 apps for descriptions and reviews when seeking hiking circuits.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/7bc32a0450/w/518.webp)

### Komoot

### CartesIGN

IGNrando is the official app developed by France's National Institute of Geographic and Forest Information. Completely free, it provides direct access to IGN maps, the benchmark for precise, reliable hiking mapping in France.

Mapping used

- official IGN maps including the famous 1/25,000 series, providing a precise view of relief and terrain features.

These maps show:

- paths and tracks
- contour lines
- relief and terrain features.

Offline use:

- You can record, import or export a route. Its 1/25,000 map is then available offline, although only the area around the saved route remains sharp and detailed; tiles covering the entire surrounding area are not saved.
- You can also simply view your intended area online: it remains viewable offline in the field until you reconnect.
- some IGN maps may be downloadable for offline use, but not the 1/25,000 tiles.

At RayonRando, we love this precise, free tool. It is particularly useful to prepare routes or analyse terrain before a hike. In the field, it lets you check within seconds exactly where you are and ensure you take the correct turning. Activate GPS only occasionally to save battery.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/70fd6aaa6a/w/300.webp)

### CartesIGN

### iPhiGénie

iPhiGénie is popular with experienced hikers.

It provides access to various topographic maps and precise GPS navigation.

Mapping used

- IGN maps available by subscription
- other topographic maps available.

Offline use

- maps downloadable offline
- full GPX track management

iPhiGénie is often used for field navigation and precise route preparation. A major advantage is using IGN 1/25,000 base maps.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/f751109e0d/w/461.webp)

### iPhiGénie

### Whympr

Whympr focuses on mountains and outdoor activities.

It brings together route, weather and mountain conditions information.

Mapping used

- IGN maps available in the app

Offline use

- maps downloadable offline with a subscription
- import and follow GPX tracks

Whympr is mainly used for mountain activities: Alpine hiking, ski touring and mountaineering. We have not tested it.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/b8870a1a9f/w/340.webp)

### Whympr

## Beyond apps, which reliable sources help find and prepare hikes?

### Natural park and tourist office websites

Many areas also offer their own routes.

You can consult:

- regional natural park websites
- tourist offices
- sometimes departmental or municipal websites.

These often provide local hiking descriptions, sometimes downloadable maps and natural heritage information.

Routes are generally suited to the area and well maintained.

At RayonRando, we recommend going beyond website information and contacting parks and tourist offices directly by phone, email or in person. This provides truly current information about paths, weather, accommodation and alternatives if needed.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/1cbbd40727/w/982.webp)

### Walking guidebooks: a reliable source for preparing FFR waymarked routes

Guidebooks from the French Hiking Federation remain a reference for many walkers.

They offer:

- selected, checked routes
- detailed descriptions
- maps and practical information.

They are especially useful for preparing official GR long-distance trails and particularly multi-day hikes.

Can you create your own hiking route?

The tools above and paper IGN maps, discussed below, also let you create a personalised route: plot it on an IGN map, alter an existing route and export a GPX track.

At RayonRando, we recommend doing this only with genuine independent hiking experience. That means reading and interpreting maps for preparation, but also understanding the landscape in the field to locate yourself and avoid mistakes.

Before departure, check:

- Waymarking: absent waymarks or only cairns make navigation trickier and may slow progress. Account for this when deciding hike or stage length.
- Distance and elevation change, providing an initial estimate of difficulty and duration.
- Potential difficulties. Identifying a cable-protected section, scree or boulder field lets you reassess effort and duration.
- And, of course, usual weather-related precautions.

Only when you master these aspects should you consider building your own route.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/f0d4e79d71/w/978.webp)

## Do you still need a paper IGN map for hiking?

Yes, for:

- Planning your own route at home. A 1/25,000 IGN map offers a broad, detailed view of the whole area, while even a fairly large screen gives a narrower view: zoom out and you lose detail.
- Confirming you are on the correct route in the field. Sometimes a phone's GPS screen is too small for certainty.
- Changing route if an unexpected problem invalidates the original plan: weather, damaged terrain, fatigue or injury. Here too, a smartphone screen gives too narrow a terrain view.

Often, however, the IGN map becomes secondary:

- On day hikes along busy, well-waymarked paths, increasingly with junction signs, a route description or app may suffice.

Occasional GPS use instantly confirms you are on the path without unfolding and refolding a map.

![](https://rayonrando-medias.s3.fr-par.scw.cloud/products/content/c9cf11b5b8/w/827.webp)

## How to choose a reliable hiking route?

When finding a hike online, a few checks are useful.

Points to check:

- Distance and elevation change are basic information linked to expected duration.
- Terrain difficulty. If information is missing, take time to study the map and seek more details.
- Review number and dates. An old description with few recent reviews may no longer be valid.
- Whether the plotted track makes sense on the map
- Source reliability.

Cross-checking several tools and descriptions often helps prepare a hike better and avoid unpleasant surprises.

## Conclusion

Useful sources for hiking route ideas in France include specialist websites and apps, IGN maps, institutional websites such as parks, tourist offices and municipalities, and walking guidebooks.

For French hikes, at RayonRando we find websites and apps using 1/25,000 IGN base maps most practical and reliable. Others use OpenStreetMap and are also useful, especially abroad or for cross-border hikes. IGN can be awkward for a route crossing from the French to Spanish Pyrenees, requiring another base map beyond the border.

Depending on the tool, you can also download maps and GPX tracks for offline use, potentially essential in mountains or areas with poor reception.

We particularly recommend CartesIGN, Visorando and Alltrails. However, comparing sources often remains best for planning a reliable hike suited to your ability.
