# How to care for your down sleeping bag and jacket

Down is one of the best insulators for hiking and wild camping. Light, compressible and very warm, it is used in both sleeping bags and technical down jackets. But its performance does not last forever. Without suitable care, down loses loft and therefore its ability to keep you warm.

Caring for a down sleeping bag or jacket is straightforward if you follow a few simple rules. Washing, drying, storage: here is a clear, reliable guide to preserving your down equipment for years.

## Why down care is essential

Down works through its **loft**. The more airy the down feathers, the more warm air they trap. Dirt, sweat and moisture stick feathers together, greatly reducing thermal insulation.

Poorly maintained down means:

- less warmth for the same weight
- loft that no longer returns
- a shorter lifespan

Conversely, properly washed and dried down retains its performance for many years.

## Should you wash your down sleeping bag or jacket?

Yes, but **not too often**.

Washing is needed when:

- the down no longer lofts properly
- the lining is dirty or greasy
- odours persist despite airing

On average:

- down jacket: 1 to 2 washes per year, depending on use

### Machine washing: the recommended method… with care.

The simplest, most effective solution, but only **with a suitable machine**.

Essential requirements:

- a “delicates” programme you have already tested on delicate laundry.
- temperature: cold to **30°C maximum**
- gentle spin… genuinely gentle (see below)

Before washing:

- close all zips and hook-and-loop fastenings
- check seam condition
- ideally, put the item in a laundry bag

### Hand washing: when?

Wash down by hand to ensure you take no risks. This is particularly necessary when:

- the down is old or fragile
- you do not have a suitable machine

Proceed gently:

- lukewarm water
- soak for a while to let the detergent thoroughly penetrate everything
- press gently without rubbing
- rinse thoroughly and at length, several times if necessary.

This method requires more time and care, particularly when drying.

**Specialist down detergents** are available. I recommend using them. They preserve loft and rinse easily. If using ordinary detergent, I think using less than the standard dose is preferable.

Avoid ordinary detergents. They contain agents that strip feathers' natural oils.

Use:

- a **specialist down detergent.**
- enzyme-free
- designed to preserve loft
- easy to rinse

## Spinning down: take care!

Please note: **when machine washing, disabling the spin is safest**.

In this case:

- Drain the machine without spinning.
- Squeeze the sleeping bag to remove water, rather than twisting it.

You can use a **gentle spin programme**, provided you have tested it before. The spin must be very slow. Otherwise, excessively fast rotation clumps down into balls, and it will not redistribute properly during drying.

## How to dry down properly without losing loft

### Tumble drying: best if you have a suitable programme

Contrary to popular belief, tumble drying works well provided you **have a suitable programme:**

- low temperature (30°C)
- long cycles and low speed. You can run successive short cycles to monitor drying progress.
- Always add **dryer balls** or **clean tennis balls**.

The balls separate feathers, maintain even filling distribution and restore down's volume. Drying may take several hours. Be patient.

### Air drying: good in the right conditions

Natural drying is suitable when:

- the air is dry
- you spread your down item horizontally on a drying rack
- the item is shaken regularly
- the down is never folded while damp

Please **do not hang your wet sleeping bag on a washing line**. Gravity will again cause the down to fall and form dense clumps.

In all cases, shake it after drying to ensure an even distribution of fill.

Storage is often overlooked, yet crucial.

Make sure your **sleeping bag is completely dry** before storing it.

- Preferably, do not store it long-term in its compression sack. The compression sack is only for transport.
