Gas stoves and fuel

Here is a selection of gas and other fuel stoves specially suited to self-sufficient hiking:
- Gas hiking stoves are the lightest and easiest to use. They need no special maintenance, but you must have gas available. They are very efficient in ordinary conditions, although efficiency can fall at high altitude and in extreme cold. They are also well suited to camping.
- Liquid or solid alcohol stoves are useful because fuel can be found everywhere, without transport restrictions, unlike gas when flying, for example. Some models are also ultralight and compact. Their efficiency and heating power are lower than gas stoves. They are well suited to heating soup or occasional cooking as a backup.
- Petrol or multi-fuel hiking stoves also let you find fuel all over the world. They perform very well for cooking, including at high altitude or in difficult weather. They require more maintenance and are heavier than gas stoves. They suit long overseas trips and high mountains.
Remember useful accessories such as windscreens to protect the flame, lighters, piezo gas igniters or fire starters, and cartridge supports to stabilise your stove.
