Why does a mat insulate against cold ground rather than warm you up?

Even an insulated hiking mat does not generate warmth. It creates a thermal barrier between your warm body and the cold ground.

The aim is twofold:

  • Limit body heat loss
  • Limit the cold felt through contact with the ground

Manufacturers use several techniques to achieve this insulation: compartmentalised construction, Primaloft-type fill and reflective aluminised films.

Fortunately, manufacturers use a common measure to simplify comparison of hiking mat insulation: R-value.

Feel free to reread our article on the subject.

Does sleeping mat size affect insulation?

A standard “regular” insulated mat (50 to 55 cm wide) generally provides sufficient warmth and comfort. A “wide” version (60 to 65 cm) lets you rest your arms on it and improves protection against cold.

Beware: standard 2-person tents often cannot accommodate 2 wide mats. One wide and one regular may fit instead.

Inflatable or self-inflating: which insulates better?

Beware assumptions about self-inflating mats: foam alone does not provide better insulation than inflatable mat technologies.

Thin self-inflating mats (around 2 cm) inevitably provide limited insulation. Inflatable insulated mats use more technical construction, enabling the highest insulation ratings (R-value).

What about roll-up foam mats?

Folding or roll-up trekking foam mats are affordable, but far less effective against cold than insulated inflatable mats.

Here is RayonRando's selection of the best insulated trekking mats, both inflatable and self-inflating:

Our selection of inflatable mats

The ultralight, compact inflatable mat

NeoAir XLite Regular (Therm-a-Rest)

465 g! The Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XLite Regular is a featherweight. Even at this weight, a reflective layer provides highly effective insulation (R-value: 4.2). At 6.3 cm thick, it is very comfortable. All packed into the space of a 1 L bottle!

NeoAir XLite NXT Regular lightweight inflatable sleeping mat

Extra insulation in an ultralight mat for women who feel the cold

NeoAir XLite Women's (Therm-a-Rest)

Under 1.70 m tall? You are in luck. Therm-a-Rest's NeoAir XLite Women's has greater insulation than the Regular, with reflective membranes (R-value 5.4). Its 1.68 m length reduces weight further to 440 g.

The extra-thick yet compact insulated mat

Tensor All-Season Regular Mummy inflatable mat

Packing to 20 x 9 cm, the Tensor All-Season Regular Mummy is among its range's most compact inflatable mats, weighing just 404 g. Yet it retains a substantial 9 cm thickness, almost 2 cm more than the NeoAir XLites above. Primaloft filling and 2 aluminised layers provide an R-value of 5.4.

Tensor Insulated Regular Wide (Nemo)

If mummy mats feel cramped, try the Tensor Insulated Regular Wide: 64 cm across the mat's full width. Excellent insulation remains, with two aluminised layers (R-value: 5.4).

Tensor All Season Regular Wide inflatable sleeping mat

Outstanding thickness and maximum insulation for 4 seasons

Ether Light XT Extreme Regular (Sea to Summit)

At an impressive 10 cm thick, the Ether Light XT Extreme Regular cushions every movement of back and side sleepers.

Entirely independent cells provide very high insulation in this trekking mat (R-value: 7.4).

Ether Light XR PRO Insulated Regular inflatable sleeping mat

The most insulating winter inflatable mat

NeoAir XTherm NXT Regular (Therm-a-Rest)

Exceptional insulation from the Therm-a-Rest NeoAir XTherm NXT Regular (R-value 7.6) at just 565 g. Even on snow, it completely isolates you from cold. Its 70 D fabric also provides excellent abrasion resistance.

The affordable, lightweight insulated mat

Micro Air (Trangoworld)

Primaloft insulation achieves an R-value of 3.2 while keeping weight low (490 g). The Trangoworld Micro Air gives moderate budgets good 3-season insulation without weighing down the rucksack.

The most insulating, comfortable winter inflatable mat

Tensor Extreme Conditions Regular (Nemo)

At 9 cm thick, this featherweight mat provides effortless comfort.

It also guarantees excellent insulation (R-value: 8.5), highly effective even on frozen ground and in very low temperatures.

ProLite Apex Regular (Therm-a-Rest)

For a sufficiently lightweight self-inflating hiking mat, the Therm-a-Rest ProLite Apex Regular suits at 680 g. Low weight combines with compact packing.

While maintaining good insulation (R-value: 4).

At 5 cm thick, this self-inflating mat remains an alternative to inflatables.

A particularly affordable insulated self-inflating mat

Camp SI Mat Regular (Sea to Summit)

The Camp SI Mat Regular offers the lowest price for a well-insulated self-inflating mat. Its R-value of 4.2 comes from horizontally rather than vertically cored foam, avoiding thermal bridges. You sacrifice a few centimetres of cushioning for a 3.8 cm thickness, still perfectly acceptable if you like a firm bed.
