Head torches

These headtorches are useful for night hiking, wild camping and mountaineering, as well as night races and trail runs. Depending on your use, power, battery life and weight are important criteria.

Choose your headtorch according to the conditions of use:

  • for wild camping: low- or medium-power LED headtorches may be enough. A medium-power headtorch is useful for reading at camp. An entry-level headtorch may suffice for backup use.
  • Headtorches for night hiking should be a little more powerful, such as 70 or 80 lumens, or very powerful if you need to find your route. Consider our Petzl and Led Lenser headtorches for the highest quality. Powerful lights may combine two beams: a broad beam for nearby surroundings and a focused beam for distance.
  • Powerful headtorches suit night trail runs or cycling. Petzl and Led Lenser models are again the best suited. Pay attention to how light output changes:
    • standard powerful headtorches have long battery life, but their output drops quickly;
    • a recent innovation, Petzl constant-lighting headtorches provide steady output over a shorter period;
    • lights with automatic brightness adjustment are practical when switching between looking at your feet, reading a map and looking into the distance. They also extend battery life.
    • High output and long battery life generally mean greater weight. You can balance this by choosing a light with the battery pack at the back of your head, improving stability, especially for trail running.

Finally, rechargeable headtorches are particularly useful for regular use.
