What safety accessories for hiking?

There are many possible unexpected incidents when hiking: severe weather, injury, illness, getting lost or broken equipment. A small mishap can sometimes put us in danger if we cannot handle it.

Besides my first aid kit, I therefore never go hiking without various safety accessories. Here is a short list of what I generally use. It is an example, without claiming to be exhaustive or suitable for every situation.

How to use a compass correctly when hiking?

Having a compass is good. Knowing how to navigate with it is better! At Rayonrando.com, we do more than sell compasses: we also explain how to use your compass correctly.

A compass in 4 parts:
  • The moving magnetic needle, whose red tip points north;
  • The direction-of-travel arrow, fixed on the compass baseplate, which you point towards your intended direction or a landmark;
  • The rotating dial, which helps you maintain the correct direction.
  • The marker called the “house” on the rotating dial, used for simple calculations.

A compass can be used in several ways:

  1. To orient your map and better identify its features.
  2. To measure a distance on your map and estimate remaining walking time.
  3. To locate yourself on the map when lost.
  4. To follow a direction by calculating a bearing and taking the correct route.
