How to read an IGN map?
Tired of following a guidebook with a predetermined hike? Want to learn navigation so you can avoid getting lost, adapt your route or discover new natural areas?
We explain how to read an IGN map, including:
- Understanding the purpose of different symbols and map keys.
- Knowing how to locate yourself and navigate.

A spacious 1-person hiking tent: is it possible?
Well, no! If you really want to be comfortable hiking alone, a 2-person tent will be much more pleasant.
A particularly brief article, you might say. But my sense of nuance requires me to say more and offer a few solutions.
First, if you choose a 1-person tent, it is probably for one of these reasons: keeping weight or packed size down, having a small footprint that makes finding a camping spot easier, staying discreet in nature, or reducing the budget compared with an equivalent 2-person tent.
In that case, a “spacious” tent is probably not your priority. Depending on your expectations, however, you may still want a “reasonably” spacious or “comfortable” tent.

Livestock guardian dogs and their flocks: how should you behave?
Passing close to a flock during a mountain hike is a pleasant moment for some, while others dread being near animals that can be as tall as us. But fear is often triggered by the presence of a livestock guardian dog.
This fairly common situation raises questions:
- How does a livestock guardian dog differ from a pet dog?
- Why is a guardian dog present among the flock?
- If it runs towards us barking, is it dangerous?
- What should I do if I meet one of these dogs?
We answer these questions to dispel misconceptions and help make the encounter a calm one.
